The Dencun Upgrade on the Holesky Testnet has been successfully implemented by Ethereum developers

Ethereum core developers have achieved a significant milestone in the path to the next major upgrade for the Ethereum network. The Dencun upgrade has been successfully implemented on the Holesky testnet, marking the final testnet upgrade before its anticipated deployment on the Ethereum mainnet next month.

The Dencun upgrade was officially forked onto the Holesky testnet, with confirmation provided by Ethereum execution client Nethermind. The implementation was completed and finalized shortly after. This follows the phased approach taken for implementing the upgrade, which involved prior deployments on the Goerli testnet on January 17 and the Sepolia testnet on January 30.

With the successful deployment on the Holesky testnet, the Ethereum All Core Developers are now expected to set a date for the mainnet deployment of the Dencun upgrade during their upcoming call. The deployment is anticipated to take place in early to mid-March.

One of the significant features introduced in the Dencun upgrade is proto-danksharding (EIP-4844). This feature combines the improvements from both the Cancun and Deneb upgrades on Ethereum. Proto-danksharding introduces “blobs,” enabling Ethereum nodes to temporarily store and access large amounts of off-chain data. This breakthrough aims to reduce storage demands, resulting in lower transaction costs for Ethereum decentralized applications (dapps). It will particularly benefit Layer 2 rollup chains, allowing for more cost-effective and scalable data processing.

The last major Ethereum upgrade, Shapella, took place in March 2023, which enabled users and validators to withdraw their staked ether on the network for the first time. Now, the Dencun upgrade brings new enhancements to both the execution layer and consensus layer, laying the foundation for increased scalability and improved functionality on the Ethereum network.
